Taxes Paid by Michigan Transportation Industry

According to an article published in American Transportation Research Institure, January 2025 here is an interesting tidbit of information oin taxes paid by Michigan Trucking Insdutry.  

  • Michigan’s trucking industry paid $901 million in federal and state roadway taxes — that’s 23% of all taxes owed by Michigan motorists, despite trucks representing only 7% of vehicle miles traveled in the state.
  • A typical five-axle tractor-semitrailer combination paid $9,672 in state highway user fees and taxes over and above the typical taxes paid by businesses in Michigan. 
  • Trucks only travel 6.2 mllion miles on public roads, while the total miles driven by all motorists is 95.9 million miles.
